made it to rome on a 7something7 airplane, a giant, thai airways complete with thai art paintjob, cruised over dark lands of india, nepal, the himalayas, pronounced “himalayas”, the caspian sea, the black sea. didn’t sleep much thanks to bratty teen expedition from Britain that felt the need to advertise their presence without fail or interruption, all night long, and after several signs of obvious agitation, i actually had to stand up and turn around…so fucking ironic too, on the minibus to the airport some germans and english dorks were talking out loud about “americans”, seeing firsthand how nationality reputations circulate and evolve, keeping silent, in fact, one girl looks at me “you’re not american right?”, “no”, i just smile along with the conspiracy, but they don’t really have anything good, just the usual “stupid” or “obnoxious” american stories…
so we landed in rome, not before 5 minutes of grab-your-neighbors-arm-this-could-be-it turbulence about 30min before landing, took the express train to termini immediately and found a “dorm bed” in stargate hotel near termini for 30,000 lira after trying some suggestions of al and carla’s that were booked up, but dorm beds are first come first serve, i am out of the golden buddha lands of cheap rooms, sucks, cause i am so spoiled and used to such incredible value, but the room is nice and the bathrooms are too, even if they are down the hall. couldn’t check into the room until 1pm so i cruised to the colosseum, walked around, to tired really to care, but classical beauty abounds, despite the mock gladiators with k-mart plastic sheilds and helmets posing for tourist picts…i get the twisted urge to attack one of them, but instead wander through some park where italian men smoke and drink cheap beer out of big bottles, dry haircuts on the grass, music playing, a few inebriated dance footings here and there, but i am too tired to hang with the masses for long so i make it back, get a bed and crash till 6pm.
