the day the internet died…
A few years ago internet banks like Security First Network Bank were on the rise. I read some reviews and opened an account with SFNB, and was nothing but pleased. Diligent customer service, 6% on checking with no minimum balance. You couldn’t beat it. If it weren’t for the ATM usage fees I would have kissed Bank of America away entirely.
But all good things come to an end, like the unfortunate guy on 285 in the ATL found out today, and SFNB was bought out. A company called Centura took over, and for a while it was ok, although the free banking was now $5.95 a month. What Centura neglected to inform their customers was that they would be charged $20 a month for balances below something like $500, and needless to say there was no more killer interest rate. Oh, it was all in their microscopic font, but they wouldn’t actually email you such pertinent information. They want you to find out the hard way…by putting cash in their pockets. Well, such is the nature of capitalism. If it’s legal deceit, it’s just making money…
And Yahoo now, mother of all decent free internet services, wants to charge for mail forwarding and pop access. Shame on you yahoo.
Salon with its pay service for feature articles, whatever. Those guys are probably legitimately broke.
What ever happened to the glory days of Kozmo.com?
Pretty soon well have to pay state taxes on the digital cameras we order from random-internet-store.com…and that’ll be the day the internet died.
I’m looking for another internet bank. So far NetBank looks like the contender. They’ve been around long enough. Gomez.com look like they have some decent banking reviews, and info on a bunch of internet banks. If anyone knows of any particularly good ones, let me know.
On an unrelated note…gee, I thought my occasional insomnia was bad…I guess this is what happens when you’ve been truly abused by internet banks.
