Year of the Peasant

Heading to Venezuela this afternoon for a couple weeks. It’s good to be travelling. It’s good to be getting away from work. It’s really good to be venturing outside the country. No itinerary at the moment other than Salto Angel and Merida, in addition to Caracas of course.

The general strike begins in Caracas tomorrow, which is the fourth attempt in a year, organized by Venezuelan business groups to oust Chavez, who has titled 2003 as “year of the peasant”. I don’t think any of the previous strikes have lasted longer than a day.

I’ve been wondering what Caracas must be like, from a civilian point of view, with all the political activity. But it looks like business is still usual. Sadly enough, Nearly 50 dead in another of those infamous disco blazes. Terrorism not suspected at this time. Just good old faulty wiring.

Stay tuned for an update from Caracas…
