The Final Days of the Nazi Beetles

Sound like a B flick? But it’s true, today the final beetle rolled off the assembly line in Mexico. And if you’ve been to Mexico City recently, chances are you’ve been robbed in one. 21,529,464 of these cute little guys. I’m gonna miss em. And you urbanites are thinking, “Huh? Didn’t they just bring it back? Can’t you get the Beetle Turbo in Cappuccino?” No you ninny. The real beetle, infinitely lower-tech and cooler than its sleek modern re-invention, has been in production since…well…holy smokes…the third reich!

The design was commissioned by Hitler, who instructed his engineer, Ferdinand Porsche, that the car “should look like a beetle.” About 600 were produced before 1945; most of these went to Nazi officials.

To think that such a cute little nazi buggy came from Hitler.
