On Being Kanunu

Like it or not, Kanunu Reeves has become the principal sci-fi lead of choice over the last decade, and although we most likely all agree on his acting abilities, I think he actually pulls off the detached, caught in a pickle sci-fi guy. Sort of, at least. So it’s not surprising that Linklater snatched him for the upcoming Scanner Darkly, one of PKD’s best, which is to be another animated number, like Waking Life. Animated Kanunu! In a way, he’s perfect for the part of Bob Arctor.

Well…he beats big Schartzenager, who’s caught up in politics; or Cruise, who thinks his bland style translates into sci-fi, tuff guy who bullies network morning talking heads, but then of course Tom is actually part of a sci-fi cult religion, so I guess that gives an edge. I must say, flipping recently I came across ‘Bill and Ted’ briefly and admit Big K’s acting has come a LONG way.

It’s sad Ewan McGregor sold his ass to Lucas, I wouldn’t mind seeing him do serious/dark sci fi. Or Harrison Ford tackle a serious role again, but I guess that goes for any genre as much as sci-fi. SW-IV (A New Hope) is actually a western anyway, and if you’ve never seen Kurasawa’s ‘Hidden Fortress’ and take Lucas the least bit seriously, you must.
