I realized after purchasing a fancy stainless steel trash can to match my other stainless steel appliances of greater fame and utility, that the step-pedal pop-up lid mechanism has changed the fancy footwork of making omelettes and just about all other activities that take place in the kitchen. For instance, before, when there was simply […]

There is a lot of talk in Atlanta, about what can be done to save Underground, the perpetually soulless downtown tourist complex containing, “unique shopping, dining, history and entertainment.” They’ve tried lots of government sponsored and taxpayer funded measures to no avail. Not even an extended 4am last call could help. Now the Zoo is […]

You know those sneakers that the little kids have that have plastic wheels hidden in them? And why don’t they make those for adults? After all, I’m still the guy that exits the grocery store riding my shopping cart like a chariot through the parking lot.

Finally watched Idiocracy, Mike Judge’s uber-satire of a dumb-as-rocks devolved human civilization 500 years in the future. I had been warned that the movie wasn’t that great, so had low expectations. Quite the opposite story of Children of Men, which carried the burden of so much critical acclaim you almost had to be disappointed within […]

Atlanta cops are on a real tear recently. After lying to get a warrant for a no-knock drug raid, in which a dangerous drug beast in the form of a 92 year old woman was gunned down, they terrorize and arrest an oxford historian for jaywalking. Fucking jaywalking sting! Brilliant! So needed in this […]

I’ve always dug the culture jamming ethos, as bratty and hypocritical as it can sometimes be, because it’s so often really fucking clever. Nothing blows my dress up like good satire. Jean-Christian Bourcart gets it right with his incredibly impressive guerrilla art photography project of images of Iraqi dead projected on unsuspecting suburban houses and […]

While I’m on a youtube roll, here’s some Mastodon behind the scenes from the current Eurotour with Tool.

Came across this blast from the psychedelic past. Crimson back in the trying-a-little-too-hard-to-be-spontaneous days, complete with caveman percussion weirdo Jamie Muir on the whistle, Bruford shirtless in overalls, and Fripp with dazzling frizzy fro and silk scarf. A great music project that got it wrong as often as they got it right.

Two of my favorite cds of 2006 are from Atlanta bands, Mastodon’s “Blood Mountain” and Snowden’s “Anti-Anti.” Both releases enjoyed good press, and Mastodon are clearly destined for Metal Superstardom. The Black Lips recently signed to Vice. Now Deerhunter is poised to release “Cryptograms” for Kranky, one of my all time favorite labels. Here’s […]
