ATL’s a’ Blowin up!
Two of my favorite cds of 2006 are from Atlanta bands, Mastodon’s “Blood Mountain” and Snowden‘s “Anti-Anti.” Both releases enjoyed good press, and Mastodon are clearly destined for Metal Superstardom. The Black Lips recently signed to Vice. Now Deerhunter is poised to release “Cryptograms” for Kranky, one of my all time favorite labels. Here’s Deerhunters “Strange Lights:”
OK, Deerhunter, I love Pollard/Sprout style songwriting too, but dynamic melodies over those chord changes would be even more impressive. Mentally, I always confuse this band with Deerhoof, a band actually doing a more original thing, from SF I believe.
Deja vu chilly is it yesterday again? No way deerhoof puts on as big a show as deerhunter.
Hmm, that one struck me as more Eno than Pollard, whatever though, that’s not the best example of Deerhunter. It gets into total freakadelic land.
Snowden blows. Deerhunter sucks. Black Lips are fun. Mastodon is ruling the metal.
