>>It is there to Ensure that the Proletariat maintain some level of individual >>freedom

But as the article points out, the "good intentions" of saving us from evil corporate warlords, actually harm us. The FTC trying to block the merger of two organic grocery stores? Come on. The businesses are consolidating so that they can better serve their customers, not rape them. And if they tried to rape us, we'd all just shop at Trader Joe's or the market would quickly come to the rescue with a better alternative. This is how truly free markets work; they empower individual choice. Our government on the other had would limit that choice. The ultimate irony here is that many governments are selling socialist authoritarianism as "protection" for the "working man," and people are sucking it up all over. Don't be a sucka.

I AM afraid of mergers...but only sometimes...you bring up empowering the porletariat, standing up for individual freedom and controlling the world from the ground up. Well, that is what keeping big business from getting too big or gaining too much control will help to enable. Now, each merger seems to require individual analysis to determine it's harmful (or helpful) effects on its employees and the larger population. I'm not saying that all mergers are bad. And certainly a blanket policy is never ideal. But it's important to note that government regulation in this area is not there just to take away our freedom and screw over the businesses attempting to gain an inch in an ever-increasingly competitive market. It is there to Ensure that the Proletariat maintain some level of individual freedom (at the expense of corportate freedom?). I wish everyone won, but with so many conflicting interests in the world, we are doing well not to injure anyone or subject the lowest income sector of our society to abject poverty. And honestly, we have suceeded in doing this in the U.S. to a much greater degree than much of the rest of the world. "Poverty" in the U.S. is like being rich in some countries.
I'm not sure how much government regulation of mergers has to do with this directly, but it's all a piece of the pie. And it is a delicious pie. But some people would rather have rhubarb. But other people think rhubarb is weird b/c it's leaves are poisonous. But at least we have pie. Yummy, yummy pie.

Well, not really sure what you are saying, but yes, control the world from the bottom up, enable the proletariat, stand up for individual freedom. Don't believe the governments false promises of utopia. Not to excuse the infamous "sweatshops," but most are just places where people find work where they normally couldn't. Would you rather parents sold their children into sexual slavery in Cambodia than worked a crummy job that paid more than anything else available? Not to excuse employers at "sweatshops" from poor treatment of workers, of course they should be held accountable.

Go tell it to all the sweatshop owners, people who've lost manufacturing jobs, and the ghost of Tesla! Here is a control freak of one: control-the-world-from-the-bottom-up! Every dollar is a vote and the spender should be as conscious as possible of where it's going. Also what they choose to give their attention to - "entertainment" keeps getting watered down because we allow it too. Regulation is a different topic entirely, but everyone should be able to control themselves and be conscious of where their money goes.
