Stress is a normal reaction of the body. It makes it possible to face certain unforeseen events or to adapt to important changes.  They appear when our body can no longer cope with permanent and repetitive tensions. Note that stress alone does not create any pathology . Rather, it will be at the origin of the evolution of certain pre-existing conditions such as asthma , migraine , diabetes , etc.

The body’s first reactions to stress

When our body is under too much stress, it starts by sounding the alarm. If you are experiencing one or more of the following signs, it may be time to reduce the tensions around you:

·         Fatigue , especially upon awakening, which is not repaired by sleep;

·         Sleep disturbances  ;

·         Anxiety  ;

·         Irritability  ;

·         Nervousness  ;

·         Rheumatism : joint pain, periarthritis, arthritis  ;

·         The muscle contractions , including aches neck or back and cramps  ;

·         Sexual disturbances with decreased libido; 

·         Memory loss : forgetfulness, error. 

More serious stress disorders

Men somatize more: ulcers , cardiovascular disorders and sexual problems … In general, we can identify certain “diseases” which are often correlated with too much stress:

  • The Digestive Disease  : spasms, dry mouth, bloating , diarrhea , gastritis , ulcers , irritable bowel syndrome  ;
  • The cardiovascular disorders  : palpitations , pain, chest discomfort, hypertension , angina pectoris or myocardial infarction  ;
  • The hyperthyroidism  ; 
  • The viral or microbial infections repetition due to reduced immune defenses; 
  • The skin infections  : eczema , red pimples, psoriasis , herpes , hair loss , itching;
  • The gynecological disorders  : late or missed periods, benign breast disease.


Our lives are filled with ups and downs that bring with them their fair share of stress. Each person can be affected differently by life events, and what causes stress for one person may not necessarily be for another. Stress can come from happy situations (marriage, birth of a child, promotion, etc.) or difficult situations (conflicts, pressure at work, bereavement, etc.).

When stress becomes too intense and difficult to handle, it can take its toll on your health. 

·         heart disease;

·         intestinal diseases;

·         mental illness;

·         different infections affecting the immune system;

·         etc.


The symptoms of stress are numerous and vary from person to person. They can be classified into three categories: physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms.

Among the physical symptoms of stress, you may experience:

  • muscle tension;
  • insomnia;
  • appetite or digestive system disorders;
  • sexual disorders;
  • headaches;
  • dizziness;
  • etc.

Psychic symptoms of stress include:

  • low self-esteem;
  • worry;
  • anxiety;
  • irritability;
  • restlessness;
  • etc.

Stress can also cause you to change your behaviors, for example:

  • isolate yourself;
  • take time off work;
  • consuming more alcohol or drugs;
  • change your diet;
  • etc.


 Here are some tips to better manage your stress:

  • Recognize the events that cause you stress. Pay attention to the symptoms of stress and make note of the types of events that affect you the most.
  • Identify the problem. 
  •  Talk to people you trust about your problems. Do not hesitate to consult a professional if you feel the need.
  • Learn about stress management techniques
  • Reduce tension through physical activity.
  • Be less harsh on yourself.
  • Get a good night’s restful sleep.

In a productivity-driven society, stress can have devastating effects on health. It affects more and more individuals regardless of age and social status. However, it is possible to cope with it by listening to your body and learning to recognize the symptoms of stress
